Shape's new entrance to Burgess Park at Chumleigh Gardens (£890k) opened in March 2010. A geometrically striking playable landscape forms a connection between the daunting Aylesbury estate, and the intimately scaled Chumleigh Gardens & Grade 2 listed Almshouses. Shape proposed sculpted landforms to address the transition in scale and immediately provide places for play. Using Burgess Park's language of lawns and groves, views are contained within a series of smaller scale spaces. Paths cut across hard and soft spaces, inviting children to explore. Banks to run up, walls and boulders to clamber over, groves to hide in, and a water feature to run into right next to the newly created cafe terrace in Listed Almshouses. Shape have also delivered major new routes, artificial grass pitch & changing rooms with Studio E Architects (£1.4m),an eight court tennis centre (£670k) & pavilion with Studio E Architects, and cricket ground renovation (£100k) including cricket square & practice nets (see play). All projects were delivered by Shape on behalf of Groundwork London. |
